Laurence Kotlikoff is a Boston University Economics professor who’s also known as something of an authority on Social Security. He wrote about an acquaintance who visited three Social Security offices, asking each of them how much he could expect to receive in monthly benefits.
The man received three completely different answers — so he filed his claim at the office that offered the most! In a way, this is funny, but it’s also kind of sad. Can we really count on Social Security employees to give us the correct information to make our claiming decision?
